About Loch Lomond Hideaways

The original settlement of what is today known as Luss has existed for about 700 years. Legend has it that the name of Luss takes its name from the French flower Fleur de Lys.

A local girl married a high ranking French officer in the 14th Century. When she eventually died in France, her body was returned to Loch Lomond by her husband, where he scattered the flower Fleur de Lys on her grave.

From that moment, they took root and have grown here ever since.

The local landowners were the Colquhoun family who resided at their family home of Rossdhu Castle, now part of The Loch Lomond Golf Club.

In the 19th Century, the family rebuilt much of Luss village where many of the workers from the local slate quarries lived.

The Colquhoun family of today still reside in Luss and are a great influence as major landowners of this area. The Luss Estates Company manages the land as although slate is no longer quarried here, the Estates Company is very much involved with farming, sporting activities and tourism.
